So after a long long time playing other games, Ive rebought NWN to get a cdkey and play here again. One question though. Reading this, it reads as though the puissant widget is overpowered. As in, if you want to take it regardless of build, and adjust new builds to tailor for it, abover all other options (min max view), I think it might be a bit too powerful. It depends really, Barbarian is more powerful than puissant, IMO. And with Barb, its either Barb or puissant and not both. So take it, if you plan on not taking Barb.

Barbs are fine if SR is removed and maybe (just maybe) positive dmg is toned down a bit imo. Sure they are still powerful, but I personally don't have a problem with it. However I do agree on the puissant being a bit problematic, since it's so powerful that even tho u don't feel like building around it, I still tend to do it. I feel the difference in dmg is so great, that going without it would be problematic.

I'm building for overwhelming crit and unfocused on a ranger/fi/sd and I'm wondering if overwhelming crit can be on the desired unfocused weapon instead of the focused ones since it needs imp crit.
I would like something like this:
wf,ws,imp crit, ewf, ews,o crit in shortsword wf,ws,,ewf, ews in shortbow imp crit,o crit in throwing axe
Does that work or do I need a third imp crit?

I would like something like this: wf,ws,imp crit, ewf, ews,o crit in shortsword wf,ws,,ewf, ews in shortbow imp crit,o crit in throwing axe Does that work or do I need a third imp crit? I know you understand this jonlun so if you don't want to read extra stuff skip this next bit down to an "answer." For the sake of anyone else reading I'm going to reiterate what I think was stated clearly enough in my guide regarding unfocused, but I will expand on the thinking a bit: I generally do not recommend going unfocused on builds with access to epic weapon specialization. AB is an extremely good thing, even for SD characters, and the damage boost is offset by losing the 6 you would have received from specialization. On the surface ab is only decreasing by 1, but many builds these days (ranger/fighters in particular) hitting ab cap is not uncommon so the *actual* ab loss could quite possibly be 3 a fair amount of the time. The extra damage given will be more significant the more feats you get, so having owc makes it sound more appealing, so let's look at it while including the damage from espec: focused: 18 dmg (12 pos 6 physical) unfocused: 20 dmg (20 positive) *technically the overflow above 20 is supposed to be converted to massive critical buff but I personally wouldn't count on that working. so, as stated in the guide... it's better to think of unfocused as more of a damage conversion than a damage boost when it comes to builds with access to espec. In addition to this there are a few select mobs with resistance to positive energy and you'll find yourself situationally at a disadvantage. Constructs is the only pve area I can think of offhand where the extra positive dmg would clearly outshine the physical dmg. (obviously it's a nice dmg type for pvp... but there ab is extremely important as well) Now, the "Answer:" I've been away for a while and it wasn't long before my hiatus began that owc actually came back onto the map. As such I don't have an *overwhelming* number of builds with owc and even fewer that are unfocused, so I can't verify whether it'll register properly as unfocused...
Here is what I *can* tell you:
If it doesn't work, it's going to require that you don't take owc on your intended weapon. Which would not only mean requiring a 3rd ic feat, but would also cost you some massive crit dmg which would be just adding to how questionable going unfocused seems (ranger/fighter builds are probably in the top 3 mostly likely archetypes to hit ab cap).
That said, my intuition is that it will work fine with your listed feats because wf/ewf are not pre-reqs for owc, so having the owc on the weapon *shouldn't* flag it as focused.
So in short... if you think it's worth it, or you think it's cool, build it (and post results) because nobody's intuition is a good substitute for testing!
**EDIT** taking owc on a weapon does in fact flag it as focused. this means those who want to unfocus with it need to take 3 ic feats and cannot take owc on their unfocused weapon.

Thanks gniht, I will try and build it like that to see what happens.

As much as I would like to see you trying this, but its gonna be a lot of time and effort wasted in case it doesnt work.
My take at the widget is that as soon as you take any other feat than IC on a weapon its rendered focused (put WM aside) so not only you would not get unfocused puiss dmg from OC you would also get focused Bonus damage from all other dup feats.
Good luck anyway :-p

Thanks gniht, I will try and build it like that to see what happens. I just spent about an hour looking through my builds and realized I had a char I could test it on. I was hopeful that the script would be specifically looking for things related to and/or requiring weapon focus feats as this was the case with every other feat involved, but as ape suspected that's not the case in general. So it's not going to work as you set it out. you'll need 3 ic feats and you can't take owc on your intended weapon or it flags it as focused I'm glad I was able to check, that'll save you some time. And thank ape as well, because it was his post that made me feel like I should search through my vault to try a test for you.

Wanted to state it clearly.
Puissant does NOT count pairs, it only counts sets of two! It does not count 4 weapon specs, 4 imp crits, four weapon foci, 4/6/8 of anything. Only sets of twoooo.
